My Weekend with my Daughters

Friday, March 12th, 2004

Hi All
Well I survived my first ever weekend away with my two daughters -
just the three of us.
We did a lot of laughing and did all the touristy things that you do
in Shakespear Country even down to going to see a Play at the Royal
Shakespear Theatre - Alice in Wonderland, it was so cleverly done.
The Sunday was Mothering Sunday so we met up with my eldest son and
his new SO for lunch which was really nice. This boy hasn’t seen his
sisters in over 4 years so there was some bridges built:)
The thing that amazed me about the weekend was actively thinking
about what smokers have to endure.
One of my daughter’s smokes, she is 38 and other than the
occasional ’spliff’ she never smoked and hated smoking until 4 years
ago when her 17 year relationship broke up - she figured out that
smoking would help her cope!!!!!!!

The Ides of March - party time :)

Tuesday, March 9th, 2004

Well, if he thought we were going to let this milestone slip quietly
past he’s very much mistaken ; Friday marks SIX YEARS QUIT for
Steve, and I reckon its a good reason for another party in Spinchat
this weekend :)) So - are you going to be around Steve, what time(s)
suit you best - and who’s bringing the cake?
Hope lots of us can meet up - regulars and lurkers all very welcome.
bye for now
Pam

Words of encouragement

Monday, March 8th, 2004

Thanks Cat, Steve and all for the words of encouragement. I want to do this
thing right because as quickly as I know I can put them down, I can pick
them up twice as quick if the right event occurs. I have constructed my
foundation statement and will go on to lists (will need help here) as time
allows (soon).
1. My actions will not be a response to another person’s behavior. I
cannot control anyone.
2. I believe my body is a temple and a loan. I will offer it proper
nutrition, exercise, knowledge and overall treatment which does include
occasionally goodies but does not include the hazardous and imposing effects
of cigarette smoking.
3. I will cease all SNEAKY behavior whether it is related to cigarette
smoking or other. Sneaking, by its very definition, is cowardly and
underhanded. I will stand behind my actions of which I will hopefully be
proud; especially where I am setting an example for my children.

foundation criteria

Sunday, March 7th, 2004

Hi there,
The reason for foundation statements, at least the reasoning I had in
mind when the idea occurred to me, is to distill all of our ambiguous,
ambivalent, “I want to do this but I’m not sure I can” feelings and
thoughts down to a couple of unshakable personal truths. I was looking for
the sort of state of mind we come to when we stand in front of the mirror,
look straight into our eyes (which I find to be a very ‘unsettling’
experience), and acknowledge what we know to be our personal truths. I
think many of us, certainly me, carry a lot of half thought out and half
hearted ‘desires’ to work out, to clean the basement, to finish that
course, to quit smoking, to lose weight. The one thing most of these share
is a lack of stability. They’re important in this moment but may be of less
priority in another moment. If we allow quitting to be one of those
‘variable’ desires, or one that is subject to constant questioning as to
it’s priority, then we’re in for a very rough ride.

Christine’s Foundation Statement

Sunday, March 7th, 2004

Looks good to me. Your statement is based on fact relating to your strong
desire to not poison your body.
Now, how about a quit list to reinforce your foundation statement?

Foundation???

Friday, March 5th, 2004

OK ……..really have been working on this………….
(my foundation statement - to be repeated daily as needed?)
“”Smoking kills - and I want to live………
Regardless of what I have taught myself in the past…………..
NO situation is EVER going to be improved by having a
cigarette……….
I can learn other responses …………….”"
Will this work do you think, guys???????????

Wow, am I ever getting behind on keeping up with y’all - another busy
week!!!
Kathryn; how was your ski outing? I am probably the worst skier in
the world (just ask my lovely family). I have fallen so many times
going down the slope and run into trees and once even ran into one of
the huge poles that supports the ski lift! Once, it took me so much
time to get down an intermediate slope that my youngest daughter went
up and down the mountain six times before I made it to the bottom of
that *@#%!@% mountain. I ALWAYS ended up in the lodge with either a
hot cocoa or a white russian and PLENTY of smokes! About two years
ago I made an announcement to my family that I was no longer in the
business of falling off of mountains for their entertainment and my
skiing career ended. But, now that I’ve quit smoking I’m thinking I
may give it one more shot. I’m kind of disappointed that we’ve had
