hi :)

Brenda,
Great foundation statements. Congrats on your first week.
As you continue to think about this quit in logical terms, you’ll find
that you are becoming more able to handle all of your routine triggers.
Given all you have an your plate, even the ‘routine’ may seem pretty
intense. And you’re right, there is no ‘good’ time to quit. Personally, I
think we’re in a better state of mind for quitting when there is upheaval
in our lives. I know that can sound a bit backward, but I find that most of
us experience a shift in perspective when we’re under stress and that shift
can often mean we’re a bit more observant of our own patterns.
As for ABCing routine events …. ‘routine events’ are made up of
routinely experienced sensations. ‘Out of the ordinary’ events are made up
of the same sensations. Often the only difference is in the intensity of
the sensations. So preparing and learning how you’d like to respond to
usual fatigue and boredom and hunger prepares you for extreme cases. The

Welcome to all of you who have recently joined the group. I hope you’ve
had a chance to look through some of the material on the sites that make up
our cog quitting community.
Cognitivequitting is a fairly simple program made up of 2 parts: concept
and practice.
The concept is: we experience some event (happening, sensation, ect),
usually attach some established beliefs to the event, and, based on the
beliefs, we follow through with a response.
The practice is: one or a few statements that define your foundation, a
few lists, and a bunch of ABCs.
An understanding of the concept is often enough to allow a quitter to
carry on from day to day and deal consistantly and comfortably with most of
their smoking related thoughts. However, this is only an effective tool
for dealing on an ongoing basis. In order to move past the stage of
‘ongoing dealing’ to a state of ‘not needing to deal’ with urges any

Hello, another newbie

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2004

Hello all,
My name is Tony. I’ve been smoking for about 25 years. As of late my
consumption has gone down to about 5-10 a day from easily a pack a
day for most of those years. I have realized, for quite awhile, that
my triggers are primarily emotional discomfort, but short of therapy
could find a way to change those patterns. I hope this group can help.
Glad to me you all!
Tony

Steve’s page

Monday, June 21st, 2004

Hi everyone. I am new. My stop date is June the first. 5 days and
counting. I have been reading the messages, and got the address of
Steve’s page: www.cognitivequitting.com, I tried to go there quite a
few times. It says it no longer exists, or has moved. Can anyone help
me with this, so I can find his page. I understand there is a lot of
information that would be helpful. And I need….all the help I can
get.
Thanks so much, Paulette

Another “hello” Amber………….
Nothing magic, I think, about quitting………..
I tried for years - no luck -
Needed a “scare” (doctor’s advice)
And also a challenge (daughter-in-law also quitting) :) Somehow it seems to have worked this time (at least for 5 months)
There are some great posts in the archives at the cog quit site……..
hope you will seek them out…………..(I surely found them
supportive!)
I surely hope your quit goes well………….

Picking up the talkingstick once again…

Sunday, June 20th, 2004

Hello all,
This is what I wrote to post to the newsgroup AS3. It was in this
newsgroup that I found Steve and spent the first couple of years helping
and being helped. I wanted to share the words with all of you. Using
CogQuit to get free will get you to where I am, I assure you. Keep
learning and writing. It pays off big time.
Pat

I am Yukpa hashi. I am adopted Chahta, Cherokee, English, Irish and
Scots. And I am 4 years smoke free today. It’s been awhile since I’ve
posted in here (although I frequently lurk) but I wanted to share this
milestone with all of you, my extended quit family.
There was a time that I did not think I would ever be smoke free. I had
tried everything. I am just sure you guys know exactly what I am
talking about. Cold turkey, patches, gum, hypnosis, tapes under my

Hi, I am a newbie

Saturday, June 19th, 2004

Hi everyone: Thank you so much for allowing me to enter your group.
I am a single Mom, that lives in Southern California.
I have been a smoker for over 30 years. I have wanted to stop this disgusting
habit for years.
It is affecting my health a great deal, at this point. I want to quit. I need
help.
I downloaded the smoking meter and set my quit day as June 1. Lord please
help me.
I am frightened of the withdrawals, and losing my friend (that is killing
me). lol
Hugs, Paulette
