To Warren

Hi Warren
It’s been a long time since we spoke, so I thought I’d catch you up on what’s
been happening with me this past yr or more.
Now…. I first met you in Feb last year. Well, thats not strictly true, I’d
always ‘known’ you, but it seems to me that you always decided what was best for
me whenever I got mad or upset or tense or angry…. or whatever. We never had
a conversation as such, you just stepped in and offered me one tried and tested
solution… and that was to light up. Now, you’d probably say that was the only
thing I ever taught you, but truthfully I hadn’t much clue in those days what
else might help me deal with things.
Once I got to understand more about why my only solution to the physical
discomforts I was feeling was to light up, I could then learn what else might
be more appropriate. That’s when we started talking. At first I got pretty
irritable with you, that you weren’t catching on and kept trying to offer me a
smoke, something you knew had always worked in the past for me. But, once

you’d got some practice you became very adept at offering up what was going to
help me at any given time of discomfort. Since that time you’ve melted into
the background again, and I don’t even realise you’re there most of the time.
We certainly don’t mean to get irritable with you, so hope you’ll be patient
with us as we learn more about what we really need - which is what we need to do
before we can start teaching you.

    Pam it looks like you made friend with Warren and he learned what you need.
    I am still trying to make friend with him and I know that not only he needs to
    be patience but I also have to be patience. As I know from work to train new
    people or teach something new requires a lot of patience so I guess I have to
    allow Warren some time to get used to our new life stile. Getting angry at him
    is not going to help and make things better as I learned last night.
    Today he still offered me many times a smoke (as he is still faster than I can
    think) but at least I was trying to think of something different and didn’t get
    angry with him. I just told him no we will not smoke (don’t know why I used we,
    is just came like there is really two) no matter what, I took a deep breath and
    of to get some fresh air.
    Watching out for Warren’s needs it still diffucult and tierening but hey who
    said it will be easy. As a smoker I used to take at least every hour for ten
    minutes a smoke break, now I hardly take any breaks. Today I had a lots of
    things to do and I wonted to get them done fast so I worked for hours on the

    computer and I think at one point Warren was giving me a warnig signal ( I am
    not sure if that it’s possibe.) but I tried to listen to Warren and figure out
    why he wonted to smoke in the middle of what I was doing, so I decided to take a
    ten minutes break before the cravings got any worse. So I actually got of the
    computer and took a ten minute break doing some stretches, eating an apple and
    just relaxing and felt better after. I don’t know if there is any connection to
    it or if it’s just my imagination. However the craving was gone after my break
    and I had more energy and could concentrate better.
    I don’t even know if this makes sense at all.

    First of all, they’re not ‘my’ needs, they’re yours. Or more
    correctly, they’re ours. They’re what the machine that is our body is needing.
    It’s not your imagination. We need breaks on a regular basis. We
    work better and longer if we take short breaks between periods of activity.
    A break is a mental rest, a regrouping of thoughts, a chance for the body
    to stretch and change position. A break does energize us. Breaks are as
    important as proper fuel. Thank you for taking one today. Tomorrow, plan
    on them every hr. They can be nothing more than 2 minutes (120 seconds)
    long. That’s long enough to stand up, stretch, take some deep breaths, and
    clear your head. You’ll work longer and better if you take breaks.
