Health Problem ABC

Here’s an ABC I wrote this morning. On Thursday when I found out I
needed more tests I had a huge “ache” in my stomach, chest, and
everywhere. It felt like a desire to smoke. I’m starting to
recognize this feeling for what it is (I think)… worry, anxiety,
sadness, etc. And the need to address whatever it is that’s causing
it. I didn’t think about buying cigarettes which is amazing!
I have to say that I’m still very scared and concerned even after
writing this abc… not sure there’s anything I can do to completely
get rid of that though.

Health Problem ABC
A: I’m having a health problem that could be very serious. I’m
scheduled for more tests next week.

B: I immediately think the worst (cancer). I feel very scared. A
cigarette will help me to relax till I get through this awful
situation.
C: I smoke a cigarette.
B1: I immediately think the worst (cancer). I feel very scared. I
need to realize it may be cancer, it may not. Either way a diagnosis
is better than letting it go. With a diagnosis I can get treatment
to relieve the discomfort and may even extend the length of my life.
I know I’m going to die some day and am terrified of that moment.
Whenever the issue of mortality comes up (mine or others) I shy away
from the topic (smoke). I’ve spent little time seriously and
honestly exploring my spirituality.
C1: Realize that a diagnosis is better than letting it go. Dedicate
a couple hours a week to exploring my spirituality. Try to do things
that will help me stay calm (soothing teas, “feel good” movies,
walks, etc).

    Hi Susan,
    You really are getting very good at putting together ABCs. Recognizing
    the sensations that are your experience of worry, anxiety etc and putting
    together rational thoughts will help you deal with whatever you encounter.
    I often tell people that the ABCs aren’t specifically about feeling
    better. They are about choosing how we’ll respond to what we’re feeling.
    However, when we are in control of our responses, that usually generates a
    sense of accomplishment that does create good feelings. It’s a cascade
    effect where the C1 from one ABC becomes the A of the next.
    Susan, for what it’s worth, I think you are doing marvelously.
