Hi….I’m New…..9D Quit….and Loving It !!

Hello Everyone;
I smoked for 35 years…..and got a bad scare while sick with bronchitis. I flat
ran out of air. I have COPD….and was told 4 years ago I had the beginnings of
emphysema (sp?). During this terrible bout of bronchitis (I also have bronchial
asthma) I had to have a friend rush me to the ER…and they gave me a HUGE
steroid shot (after an x-ray to rule out pneumonia) I even pulled a rib….and
had to press, with both hands and all my strength, under my left breast on the
rib that hurt like you-know-what, every time I coughed. At 3 am, Friday the 5th
of Dec., I was trying to get some sleep, and could not,…..I lay there on the
couch (couldn’t sleep with hubby because of my coughing) and thought,” I have to
quit…..” I got up and took the 5 or 6 out of my pack in my cigarette case and
broke them and threw them and the case in the trash. I took the last pack out
of my carton in the freezer, opened it, broke them all and threw them away also.
Then I went on a mission through the
house and got all the ashtrays and threw them away. I then took the trash bag

out of the trash and took it outside to the trashcans. I also went through the
house and retrieved all the lighters….and threw them away. After all
that….I thought…; “Well….that’s it. I am a non-smoker !!” And it felt
good to think that.
I feel so much better…it’s truly amazing. I was on steroids for 5 days after
the ER visit on the 7th of Dec. I am still coughing…but NOTHING like before.
I did the lists earlier, and it sure does make sense…doesn’t it !!?!!
I was pretty much doing my quit cognitively….in that my thoughts are: “I am
not going to smoke….no matter what…..I will find a different way to deal
with whatever I’m thinking that might make me want to smoke.” But this website
and group are an absolute Godsend. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE !!!!
Looking forward to our journey together !!!
Your comrad….
Betty
