Still here?

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Hi Tommy, Hanna, Yvonne, Lyndy, and Steve S …. you were all at
different stages of integrating the cognitive approach to quitting. How are
you folks doing? What’s working? What isn’t? How can we help?

Waving Hello

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Just got back from a brief vacation & digging my way thru e-mails.
Thanks Lindy for the warm welcome. You sound like your ready to begin
your quit & I’m not-atleast-not yet. Still thinking about the timer.
I already use 3 daily & don’t know if I could stand another one.
Atleast, with a timer for quitting smoking is a short duration of a
few days right? My husband, on the other hand, is reading the print
outs from here & not only understands them but is in the process of
putting them into practice during the days at the office, which is
great! I’ll keep reading ;).

I had a physical sensation!!

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

I’m so excited and that really sounds weird. My timer went off at
12. My event was “still doing a billing”. Emotion was hungry.
Indeed a smoking situation. No physical sensation…just mental. So
I ate my big, juicy pear. (can’t eat lunch yet because we walk/run
at 1:00 and you will bring up what you ate at noon)
It was what happened next. I got up to walk to the washroom and
passed Marcia’s (my sometimes supplier for cigs)desk. My eyes opened
wide, my head rather went “BOING” and my stomach turned for a second.
I wanted to walk back by her desk and ask for a cigarette BADLY. It
was so out of the blue. Mind you, I pass that desk ten times a day
with no thought of smokes.
I think what happened is that I had two events happen within two
minutes. I had finished eating the pear, which 11 days ago would
have called for a cigarette, then immediately walked past someone who
has cigarettes. Bear with me because I thought hard on this and feel

Weekend Blues

Monday, June 26th, 2006

I am proud to say that I made it through the 3-day weekend and lived
to day 9. I was never so happy to be back at work and that is a
symptom of something serious! But it was a hanging on by a thread
weekend and that will not make for a successful quit.
The timer exercise on the six hour drive was a failure since I had a
10-year old talking non stop. However I had abc’d the drives and
only had one urge to smoke. This may also have to do with the fact
that I brought enough snacks to open my own convenience store.
It was down time that drove me crazy. Whenever we were in the motel
itself I put myself through severe, wanting to bang my head on the
wall, anxiety. I had a lot of chances to escape my supportive
fans…you could see the gas station right out the window. But I’d
hear my grandaughter’s voice, in my head, saying Grandma! We had
stopped at one gas station and as soon as my husband went to the
washroom I bought a pack of cigs and a lighter. The kids face

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Hi Steve, Pam , And everyone ,
Just wanted to let you know that I have Quit today the 6th August
2004!
Thank you for all the work and support and answering of my many
questions before I quit ! I really appreciate it :-) How I went about quitting :-
For a good couple of months before today I started disassociating my
habits from smoking . Then I found this site, read and did the work
that was suggested on the Get started site. I also did some other
reading up on the limbic brain too :-) I started to take Zyban about 2 weeks ago, to help with my quit !
Also I have my partner home from work to help me too :-) Hubby was up at dawn this morning getting rid of all the lighters and
the ciggies I had left in the kitchen he also has gotten rid of my
fav smoking seat in the kitchen and the ash trays too !!

Intro.

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

I joined this site last week. I’ve been a smoker for 43 yrs. & have
lost track of how many times I’ve attempted a quit. I’m just reading
info. right now. It’s so different from other sites I’m on but it’s
really interesting food for thought. Nice to be here.

Hi Pam and Steve.

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

It’s taken me months and months to get 17 hours past day three of
another quit. I had a hard time with the timer exercise in the past
because I was smoking while doing the exercise. I really couldn’t
identify my feelings and felt the oddball because I always felt the
cool, calm and collected smoker every hour.
Now that day three is almost over, with no cigs, I am ready to set
the timer again. I really came on site to check the abc folder. You
see tomorrow morning I leave on a 6 hour car trip to Metroplois.
Appears Buddy wants us to visit Superman this holiday weekend. I
swore by my abcs in the past and I need a crash course tonight.
Coming back today and reading all the timer posts has me thinking I
can make the car ride a learning experience instead of a nightmare.
I’m really glad I peeked in today.
I’ll be back Tuesday to inform you of my progress on that God-
forsaken timer exercise. You see my best male friend in the world

Timers and lists (long)

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

Using the timer to get in touch with what we’re experiencing
physically is the first step to becoming a lot more self aware and to
begin the process of disconnecting smoking associations. It’s work,
and it can be hard to pinpoint just what we’re feeling, and where (i.e
physically)
Another approach which we’ve used in the group in the past is to start
with making some lists - and I’m hoping some of you who have perhaps
found the timer exercise hard to do would like to try this out. Do
your lists and post them, and we’ll show you how to use that
information to start retraining Warren. It involves making three
lists: I’m re-posting something Steve wrote a couple of years
ago……………………….
” List 1- Reasons to smoke. This list contains every reason you can
think of where you would light up. Everything from phone calls to
driving to anger and hunger, getting up in the morning and going to
