my computer has crashed (don’t EVER buy an HP laptop, it’s been a year
of hell with it). all of my email contacts are presently, and possibly
forever, unavailable. I’ll be back when I can. Meantime… back up
your data daily.

The Best yet!!

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Hi Steve, Pam and all at cogquit,
Today I celebrate my second year as a non-smoker!! I first joined
another on-line group during my first few days, and was shown the way
to cogquit by Pam. Being a fellow brit I followed her lead to this
group and have continued to read every day all the mail following
various members through their early days, their ups and downs etc.
This method really works providing you follow the steps and do the
work. My thanks firstly to Pam for her lead, and to Steve for showing
the way and for understanding the various “hang-ups” one can get
concerned about.
Continue with the good work!!! I will still read every day to see how
everyone is doing. If I can help in any way just shout.
Thanks again Guys you do a first class job!!!
Regards Fred S Fletcher.

lists and/vs timers

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Hi all-
I must apologize for some of the confusion that seems to exist around
lists and timers. Cognitivequitting is a program that’s been evolving for
the past 8+ years. The past year or two have seen the greatest changes as
far as a structure within which a quitter can work toward a comfortable
quit. Unfortunately, administration and house keeping aren’t strong points
of mine so there exist several areas with material that might be seen as
‘conflicting’, or at least confusing.
By way of explanation….
it was clear early on that most of the cigarettes we
smoke are cued by physical sensations. However, many of us were aware only
of some event that may or may not include certain emotions/conditions. We
rarely, if ever, included the physical sensation part of the equation. To
rectify that situation, the 3 lists were developed. List 1- all the
reasons/places/events we could think of that are connected to smoking. List

Take a deep breath and..

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Hi all
I am a lurker now out in the open and it has almost taken me as much
time and courage to do this as it did to contemplate quitting! I am
not a group joiner, I have always been the “strong one” and never
needed help etc etc. Pride goeth before the fall. Or maybe I have
just taken longer than others to trust.
Anyway: I stopped smoking on 14th October after 30 years of
smoking, with the exception of the months of two pregnanies and a
month or so after the births. I am 47 years old, a high school
teacher and executive and now a housewife for the first time in my
life. With the second child, a 16 year old, I have joined husband
in Hong Kong where he is working.
I fell off the quit twig yesterday with a resounding crash.
I have spent most of my life being the support person for other
people, to the extent that I seem to have taken on this as my

time sheet and smoking partners

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

I have done the Time sheet the past couple days but I am not exactly clear on what I am supposed to be getting out of it. Hopefully as I continue reading on the website this will come together. So far I have entries like…

8am getting out of bed calm not a smoking situation warm and happy stay warm and happy

11am read email nervous smoking situation temp. discomfort ignore it

noon read diabetic forum hunger so-so hungry eat

1pm read smoking forum nervous smoking situation thirsty get up and move

I’m just not sure this time sheet thing is going to be of much use to me. I already know that Warren takes over when my hands are idle. When I’m reading or watching tv and my hands are idle, I get the urge to reach for a cigarette. Am I doing this right?

to change my reactions, I have started doing the following…

urge…while working at home on the computer

pstrap

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Having trouble understanding how to use the pstrap. I do have the
instructions (2002) from the files & have printed it out. Assume the #’s are
the hrs. of the day. Ex: if I smoke 5 cig. in 1 hr. & am to add C to
indicate caffeine, & add which are enjoyed & how much is enjoyed i.e. the
first drag or two. Where do I put all this in one hr. slot? I did print it
out in “landscape” but it goes the length of the paper . Not sure if this
whole thing is suppose to be wrapped around a cig. pk. as the size of my pk.
is much smaller or is the intent to cover the pack so I don’t know where
they are? Just kidding ;) Thanx, as always for your help.

I can’t believe it!

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

I have made it a week now without smoking. This time has been much
better than other quits because I have really been processing my
thoughts and emotions and how they relate to my behavior. The thing
I really like about Cognitive Therapy is that you can use it in
other “out of control” areas of your life.
