Digestive System Question….
I’m not sure how to approch this subject, but here goes…. I have
quit for 8 days, besides feeling like i lost my best friend at times,
i have such awful bowel rumblings, and gas. my stomach just rumbles
and rumbles and the gas is horrable. is this normal? Didn’t know
how else to say it, thanks in advance.

Hi Anita,
I remember that part of quitting well. Digestive changes are very
common in the early days of a quit, particularly if it’s a cold turkey
quit. My understanding is that a dose of nicotine triggers the
production of stomach acid (possible why smokers enjoy so much
heartburn). When we quit and our stomachs aren’t getting their jolt of
nicotine after everything we eat, gas and/or constipation can be the
consequence. Try one of the over the counter meds for gas relief.
Don’t suffer if you can do something about it.

Not quit yet, Monday is my quit date. But in my recent quits I have not noticed any extra rumblings—at least not more than usual anyway. Alice

Hi Steve,
I am also Beachangel in chat, Thanks for your encouraging words. I am finding this thinking quit one of the easiest so far, I know I have a long way to go, and sometimes I feel more sure then others about staying quit but for the most part I am so Happy, and proud of myself, I really haven’t gotten too depressed ….yet, I know I may and probrably will,. I have been working through my craves, One at a time. I am sure hoping I have all bases covered and thought out, but not sure….I don’t want to leave any back doors open!! Knowing it is the reptilian side of my brain speaking and not the rational side makes it very easy for me to dismiss those thoughts, where as before I would dwell on those thoughts and in turn rationalize them right into taking just one more puff, just today… NOPE not anymore:)
This is a much more positive, and proactive approach. So far real good!!
Smoke and nicotine free for One week, one day, 18 hours, 51 minutes and 13 seconds. 219 cigarettes not smoked, saving $49.42. Life saved: 18 hours, 15 minutes.

I used to live on coffee, cigarettes, and Tums. Great to hear you’ve retired both the smokes and your Tums.
Congratulations on your first week down. How are you finding this thinking quit?

I’m so glad the issue of gas was raised I have been quit 19 days now and the gas is horrible I thought maybe I just hadn’t noticed it before or something but I definitely noticed it was occurring a lot now. As well constipation is an issue, I know nicotine will stimulate your bowels so I have been trying to think of some other ways to do so like increasing exercise. Its a small price to pay but a definite annoyance Lori

Another idea is to increase fibre - fruit and veggies contain a lot of
fibre. Pears are a natural laxative.

Yes lots of fruit and veggies:) & lots of water and as much getting up and moving around as possible, I am feeling very normal after not even two weeks into detox.
I am feeling good, still reviewing my exercises and taking stock of feelings, physical sensations. I have less cravings then the first week but ,still have them, some days are worse then others, it’s not so much looking for something to do with my hands, cause I have smoked outside for 20 years, so I learned how to conquer the fidget thing . Some days I feel really good, with lots of energy and some days I am dragging my self all over the place with simple things being a big chore…whew I will be glad when these 2 weeks are far behind me. I am not sure what it is triggering these cravings, May be Caffeine, I have cut back
I thought since The Nic is out of my body ,it wouldn’t be such a big trigger.
When I get a strong desire I can almost taste the cig in my mouth…and it waters for it. I know to my rational mind this is disgusting ;+~~ I dismiss this, get up walk around, brush my teeth, chew some gum, whatever…. I do notice more saliva in my mouth, I am guessing this is a consequence of quitting.
after 32 years I am finally Nicotine free for One week, four days, 11 hours, 55 minutes and 59 seconds. 287 cigarettes not smoked, saving $64.67. Life saved: 23 hours, 55 minutes.
Best Regards,
Mary
