New to Quitting

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

My name is Janet and I’m on my 4th day of quitting. I decided to quit
when I was reviewing the Nicotine section of our Understanding
Substance Abuse class through the technical college I’m attending …
I almost cried a few times because it was then I realized that not
only did I have a problem, but I was above that and needed to stop.
For the benefit of everyone involved!
Anyway, that’s it from me for now

Purpose of the group

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Just a bit of clarification for all the new folk who’ve joined the group in
recent times….
CognitiveQuitSmoking is a group which focusses on a very specific method to quit
smoking. We use specific tools to help us understand and address our smoking
habit. Ideally we share those experiences, and discuss the tools we are using
to help us achieve our goal ie Foundation statements, timer logs, ABC’s etc.
The support we offer each other here is in helping each other to understand and
work the programme, rather than the blind hanging on for dear life, chanting
mantras, distracting ourselves, or eating Walmart out of food (all of which are
readily available elsewhere on the Net) I’m sure there are ‘oldies’ here who
will attest to the fact that Steve and I (and others) are very patient, and are
willing to go through the steps several times to help people grasp what its all
about and how to use the tools. We don’t expect people to ‘get it’ straightaway
- indeed, for many of us, its a whole new way to tackle our smoking behaviour,
and getting practised at doing ABC’s, for example, doesn’t always happen

Trying very hard to quit

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Hi Everyone.
I’m a 57 yr old gal who’s been smokeing since age 11.
I’ve tried to quit in the past but made it only a couple days.
I am currently on a generic patch.(21 mg)
I’m going through serious withdrawal which I’m fighting with munching
soda crackers, which also help my Gall bladder problem.
I really feel I need outside help with this so I’m asking for a few
buddies here.
Hope to hear from some of you.
Sincerely,Deb

A REAL newbie this time

Monday, November 20th, 2006

First time in my (oh my God, over 25 years of smoking I’m so embarrassed)
life, have been quit for 7 full days. I’ve been watching the emails and
doing a LITTLE of the work over the past 6 months, and have tried a couple
of times, never made it past 3 days or so.
I’m going to go back to the website today and read some more. . . . .I’m
really having some problems with this; mostly I feel like I’m just not me
anymore. Since I didn’t smoke much if at all during the day hours, they
never present a problem for me. My triggers are morning with coffee, which
is not the worst time and I find it ok getting through that. . . .it’s the
evening. Right after working (stress)!, not right after dinner, but a
little later when I usually would have a glass of wine and smoke. Now I
KNOW that it was a bad habit that was getting worse, the wine and the
smoking. I was getting outta control like i had to have one more glass of
wine to have one more cig to have one more glass of wine. . . .etc etc. I
REALIZE that could turn into a really really bad habit. So. . . .here I am.

I’m well into my 5th day being smoke free. Loving it.

New member/question

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Hi everyone,
I’m a new member here and have been smoke-free for 17 days! I
smoked for 30 years and never thought I’d quit but my husband
and I adopted a beautiful baby last year and we both want to be
around for her.
Anyway, I smoked pretty moderately for the last decade, in an
effort to cut down, sometimes only once/twice day and aside
from the usual cravings I feel great without it but I am coughing
so much since I quit and wondering if this is normal.
Email me privately or post to the group.
Thanks,
Toby

Hi, I’m New Too

Howdy…It’s Day 21 of being smoke-free for m WHEW — did it cold
turkey…still looking for some ways to keep the cravings away…the
only really bad ones I still get are: after morning coffee; right
before bedtime; when I’m around friends who are smoking. ARGH!

thumper here

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

hi! I’m Thumper from the Q. i got your link from ion when she hosted
the bonfire last week. it sure makes a lot of sense right now. i’m
still working thru the 1st part. have read the ABCs but haven’t got a
chance to use the timer yet. want to thank you for your site. every
time i’ve tried to quit i’ve used a lot of replacements for the oral
gratification. like you say, it’s always just been a substitute for
the smoking. i guess i’ve just been hiding from life instead. also,
i’ve been a closet smoker, so i’ve been deceitful, too. i hate that.
when i read your line: “I wonder how much of my life was avoided one
moment at a time?” i said, yup, that’s me.
thanks for listening to my ramble,
14d quit with one slip…

I QUIT ………SO WHAT DO I DO NOW!

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Hello out there:
I stopped smoking 3 weeks and 5 days ago. I’ve been smoking for 39
years……..started at 16, in 1967! It was really cool back then,
smokers were everywhere. I quit only once before and lasted 8
months.
this time I got some kind of nasty virus and I got so sick that I
couldn’t breathe. Of course I tried to smoke while sick and I got
completely disgusted with myself! I decided it was time………I
really did not want to smoke anymore and after researching quiting
methods, I decided to go Cold Turkey.
Seemed better to me to withdraw in 3 days rather than to be on a
constant withdrawal on NRT. First 2 weeks were hell, I got
lightheaded, had headaches, and major “rages”…it’s amazing that I am
still married! The last few days have not been so bad….I do think
about cigarettes and I have triggers and sometimes just feel like I’m
