Paula’s timer notes

I quit smoking 11 months 4 weeks and 2 days ago. I had never really tried
to quit before. I just woke up on January 3rd and decided to quit cold
turkey and that is what I did.
The first few days I locked myself in my bedroom and watched the entire
series of Sex and the City on DVD. Then I shopped myself to death because
you cannot smoke in the mall and shopping is good excercise! lol Then I
found cog quit and my new best friend became Warren
I clung to the belief that if I could just make it through the first 3
weeks, 1 day at a time, then I would be okay. After 3 weeks the physical
cravings were gone and I realized it was going to be easier after that. I
then set my next goal at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.
I had to retrain Warren how to react to almost every new situation instead
of reaching for a cigarette. It seemed that triggers were everywhere!
Warren could be really sneaky sometimes too and I knew immediately that I
could never treat Warren as an opponent because I would lose. Warren had to

be respected as my partner in this whole process and soon we reached an
understanding. Now I rarely think about smoking. I definitely dont crave
smoking, in fact, just the opposite. I cannot stand the smell of second
hand smoke or to be around smoke at all now. Boy is it ever nice to not
have that morning cough too! sheesh!
I also found that the computer was a trigger for me so I got offline and
joined a gym. (Warren actually loves the gym!)
After smoking for 20+years, I was surprised how easy it actually was to
quit. I also cannot believe how well I can now smell things too. My nose
started to notice so many smells, I did not know existed. Actually that is
not always a good thing! ha!
I am probably the last person on the planet who should have been able to
quit. I had all the best excuses for being a smoker too. I really thought
I enjoyed smoking when I did it but I cannot even begin to describe how much
I enjoy being smoke free. So if I could quit, I am sure anyone can.
