Currently on day 41 smoke free. I just got back from a vacation in northern
michigan with three of my smoking family members. I survived! The one thing
that caused me some trouble was a trip to a casino to play the slot
machines. This was my first experience with the environment and the smoke was
very
thick in the building. I was OK while in the situation and even the rest of
the day but… about 24 hours after the exposure I was having cravings. I
guess the secondhand smoke awakened my nicotine receptors. But I was prepared
with my breathing and stretching exercises. I was also aware of the reason
for the cravings so I could deal with them.Hope everyone else is doing OK!

Hi Karen,
Welcome home and well done.
Others have had that experience of being around cigarette smoke for some
event and then having cravings the next day. You handled them perfectly.
I’m guessing that if the smoke was thick enough in the casino that you’d be
effected by nicotine to some extent. If that’s the case, then it stands to
reason that 24hrs later there would be a bit of withdrawal.
I’m glad the rest of the vacation went smoothly. However, I’m curious, did
you find yourself observing the others as they smoked?

I tried to stay away during smoking times when ever possible. I did notice
that it was very inconvenient for the others to find the places and time to
smoke. It took a lot of time and my husband in particular was having trouble
keeping his nicotine level up to par. Watching others smoke reminded me of
the freedom I now have. My son and daughter in law do not smoke and I
enjoyed their company more than when I smoked. It is an embarrassing habit
which
is not very socially acceptable. When I began smoking in 1972 it was the
norm, but not anymore. I stay focused on the negatives of smoking. It really
helps me to maintain my quit.
