When is a Crave, Not a Crave?

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

??? EVERY TIME!! What we recognise as
a “craving” for a cigarette, is really a body cue. So we need to
retrain our autopilot to translate the “crave” sensation to “BODY
CUE”, and then stop and work out a non-smoking response to whatever
feelings we are having.
Make the translation every time, and it becomes automatic, just as
reaching for a cigarette once was. Remember….no cravings, just BODY
CUES.

the timer??

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Hello,
Where do I go to find out all about the timer??
My last cigarette was about 5:15 AM the morning of October 10th. That is the
same day I had surgery. I am doing pretty good, but there are times
throughout the day that I feel SOMETHING is missing and I get cranky or blue
or just feel like crying…or I go and binge eat.
Right now I am doing ok for the most part because I am home. But in about
four weeks I will be going back to work and I know that will be very trying
for me ( I work in a nursing home).
So I look forward to hearing from you and getting support here when I need
it!!

Hello Club!!!!!!!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Dear Everybody,
Today is my one month anniversary, I have been off ciggs a month now.
I am feeling somewhat better but my lungs have a lot of recovery to
do. Lots of damage to repair, but am very hopeful now they will have
the opportunity to do just that. I have not done it all perfectly but
am convinced this time I will be able to stay off the ciggs. I decided
not to use the nicotine replacement stuff for me continuing to put
nicotine in my system seemed to trigger more cravings just kinda
replaced the ciggs for nicotine for which I am highly addicted
physically and mentally to the realease of all the chemicals in the
brain and the responses that are so significant to the addiction.
However if it works for others I would not say my way is the best
Everyone has to decide what will work for them, including the
shopping. Just wanted to let ya’ll know one month is very significant
for me and am feeling so much better besides the growing pile of money

going to try - new member

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

I am going to try again. When, I dont know.
I started a plan a month ago and tried to prepare myself for 3 weeks.
3 weeks was too long. After the 1st week and a half i was back to my
old habits. And I thought I was so strong!
I have tried Wellbutrin, I am allergic to it. I break out so bad. But
it helps, the taste of cigs are so nasty.
Then I asked the dr for a nicotrol inhaler. Come to find out it
scosts $170 which is unreasonable for me. yes I know, Id rather buy
$170 worht of cigs. But if it was guarenteed to work id buy the inhaler.
So I found this sit for something called E-Z Quit, and the
ArtificialCigarette. Has any one here tried and succeded on these? I
dont mind spending $15 for this. But I want tos ee if there is a
recommended product over another. One geared toward not smoking and
actually helping.
Any help or ideas is appreciate.

Are you a “newbie”

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

This is just a little message for anyone who is new to cognitive
quitting….(including those that I hope have come here to give it a
try..you know who you are :)..)
some people can string together days, weeks and even months,
smokefree, but alas “something happens”…it might be an argument,
illness, an accident, a stressful event..and those days disappear in a
puff of smoke. Something rocks the boat, and the habitual reaction is
to light up.
What if I told you that during those successful days of non-smoking
you could retrain yourself, so that when that stressful event slams
into your world, your habitual reaction has nothing to do with
smoking, and everything to do with making yourself feel better and
coping better with whatever comes your way?
GUESS WHAT???
flopsout!

The Carr `camp’ seem to be strongly divided (as evidenced by the
debates that rage in various quit smoking sites (like about.com) about
how `good’ Alan Carr is or isn’t). I remember finding Alan Carr’s
book (long before I found cognitivequitting) I only ever read a few
chapters because I personally found his style to be patronising, and
his dialogue very repetitive. He makes some good intellectual
arguments about why smoking is such a pointless exercise/how bad it is
for us etc, but other than maybe motivating us to quit, there’s little
else to help us sustain our quits, or quit comfortably. As I think we
cogquitters would agree, intellectualising and making reasons to quit
rarely sustain a quit, let alone a comfortable one.
If someone asked me about the book, I’d probably say `go read it, make
up your own mind, and then when you want to quit comfortably and
permanently, come to cognitivequitting.com’

Hello! Steve and all!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I’m doing really well I quit smoking Tuesday Oct 3rd! I have been kind
of busy going to rehab and all! Still doing the timer exercises it has
really helped. There are so many body cules that trigger cravings. i’m
currently useing the patch, and so far so good! I do feel a little
sluggish, but that is to be expected! Just wanted to say Hi! And let
you know that I will be getting back on the message boards! Hello Susan
hope everythig is going great for you! Take Care Everyone! Rhonda

New person, on Chantix

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

I started the med 4 days ago, and I do notice that I smoke less. I
have no problem with nausea. But I also know this is my last hope.
I’ve smoked too long and am on my way to serious complications if I
don’t quit and my therapist is the one who told me about it. She has
a patient who is about my age and smoked all her life and took it
and is totally off them and said it was nothing like the patch or
other aids. I’ve bought hypnosis aids, used all the other patches
and whatnot, had my share of side effects, just had some
hypnotherapy and aversion therapy though I like that idea only he
only had one script (darn), so I have to try this. I’ll keep you
posted, but I quit Wednesday and as hard as I know it will still be,
it will be more mental than anything else. So I’m preparing myself
more for that than anything physical. I have books to read and I
paint and have already excluded that from my painting, and computer
using. I hate cigs when I drink water, so I have been drinking diet

Hello Susan! and all!

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Hey Susan how are you doing? And thanks Sandra and Earl for questioning
about the pain. I’m getting more in tune with my body! But I have the
question too? I was in a car accident in 2001 and I also work in
nursing so back pain or sometime shoulder pain or other pains are pains
that I will peobaly have the rest of my Life! If you could help me
Steve that would be great! Because somethings I don’t really
understand! And I have tryed to get into the chat room but havn’t been
able to I’m really a computer moron! Does it cost anything to join the
chat room? Because whenever I try you have to pay! Am I doing something
wrong? And the reason for the sugarfree gum and candy and twizzlers, is
because it helps me with breaking the habit of Subciously reaching for
a cigarette! I have smoked for 35 yrs! I allso eat sm meals healthy
ones and drink lots of juice! Take Care! Rhonda
