Havn’t been part of a group before but…. might just need one, will
by this next Tuesday the “Quit” date. I have quit before about 4
times, and have relapsed. Have had pnuemonia now twice this year and
it isn’t getting any better. Have smoked over twenty years two packs a
day. Am down to one pack a day this week with pnuemonia it makes it
hard to smoke and breathe, the doc says I have a choice smoke or
breathe. Hmmmmmm. So next Tuesday is my day to quit.Joined a smoke
cessation group at a local hospital and went to the first meeting
tonight. They gave a lot of info , should scare the pants off me but,
working on an ambulance so many years I’ve seen worse, and the pink
healthy lung in that picture and the black one were both from a dead
person so that isn’t doing it for me. But I absolutely have to quit I
have the begining stages of COPD and I know where that leads definitly
not where I want to be in ten years. Soooooo I guess I will go to the
meetings try to find some support groups and do everything I can to

Congratulations. You’ve made the critical connection between smoking & deep
breathing & now you know how to handle it.
You also have the advantage of observing a human being right in front of
you who is totally connected to their body. A child’s diaphragm moves when
they breath. They don’t remain still for long periods of time because the
human body was designed to move. You know that kids get cranky when they’re
tired or hungry - so do adults, even if they don’t like to admit it. Just
as you take care of your child’s basic needs, spare a moment to take care
of those exact same needs for you. - Mairead

Going it alone … correction

Monday, June 11th, 2007

I wrote:
… women will quit when they become pregnant but go back to smoking some

That was suppose to be, “after the baby is born”.
I don’t ‘think’ that was a Freudian slip :)

Going it alone

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Hi to all
So I suppose I’ve been a ‘lurker’ for a little while now, reading the posts and
very much enjoying it all. My quit day arrived last week, Sept 7, and it’s been
going quite well so far. I really like some of the ideas in this program, and
for me the Foundation Statements are quite effective, as I tend to make some of
my decisions on the fly and based on the emotion of the moment. My difficulty
is this: The plan was for my husband and I to quit together, not necessarily on
the same day, but sometime by last weekend. He quit for one full day and
bought a pack the next day and has been smoking since. I am quite aware of the
fact that quitting is a personal and individual thing, and for the most part I’m
ok with doing it alone…. but every so often (like this morning) I find myself
having an internal battle, and saying things like ‘maybe I’ll just go back to
smoking for now and we’ll quit together’, or ‘it’s too hard to quit with someone
so close still smoking’ (outside, of course). I won this morning’s battle, but
I’m concerned about these types of thoughts. Any great words of wisdom for this

story time

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Storytelling is hugely popular in the business world right now.
You want people to know about your company - tell a story.
You want to get your message out - tell a story.
You want to be remembered tell a story.
Stories are powerful.
Find love, lose love, regain love, happily ever after. Anyone not familiar
with that story? Hundreds of variations. Hollywood has made billions of
dollars from just one story.
When I was in university I wrote a paper on urban legends - old stories in
modern dress and I claimed that humans are hard wired to tell stories. Of
course when I got it back my prof had written across it - Proof? Well I
didnt have any proof then & I still dont. But I wouldnt be surprised if
someday, someone discovers we are hard wired to tell stories. We may even
have a story gene.
For centuries the only way people could pass on vital information over time

What’s Wrong?

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

You could say I’m a lurker. I read posts, but rarely post myself.
However I really need some help here.
First my stats:
I have not smoked for 2 Months, 4 Weeks, 9 hours, 25 minutes and 32
seconds and have left 1,787 cigarettes unlit. I have saved $310.19
and have 3 Weeks, 3 Days, 19 hours and 40 minutes extra time to
spare! I have been Free of Nicotine since 6/14/2006! It’s Good to
be FREE!
It will be 3 months in a couple days, but I’m telling you I feel
totally out of myself. I am tired, no motivation, and just down
right feeling in the dumps.
This is not what I thought this would be. I felt good for a few
weeks, but I’ve slowly been feeling worse as this quit goes on. All
I want to do is sleep, sleep, and sleep.
Is this normal and if not what can I do to get back to feeling ALIVE!

Quit comfortably

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Hi to everyone who really WANTS to quit. You can do it but you have to
DO THE WORK.
Hey…..Do the Timer Exercise. Get going. See how your body reacts
whenever you are tired, thirsty, hungry, angry etc… Don’t just light
up! Take care of your body instead.
Take some deep breaths, stretch, take a walk, or eat if you are
hungry, take some fruit juice or water if you are thirsty. Warren is
always there in the background urging you in the beginning to offer
you the easy way out to light up a cigarette.
Don’t listen to him (Warren your autopilot), look after yourself in a
NON-smoking way and soon you won’t automatically reach for the
cigarette packet and lighter. Better still get rid of all the smoking
paraphenalia like ashtrays, cigs, lighters etc. Clean out your house
and start the program in earnest.
In my opinion I think this program is the ONLY way a smoker can

This week smoke-free

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

This week has gone fairly well. Withdrawal was not as bad as I
expected. The deep breathing is definitely helping. Also, every time
I feel a craving that threatens to get overwhelming, I repear this
mantra: “I can’t have even one.” It has worked.
